Apples and Roosters

Ever since my parents brought home an Apple IIc Plus in the late 80’s, we’ve been serious fans of the company.  My brother even works for them now. So when the hard drive on my 2007 MacBook failed Monday night as I was uploading photos, it was comforting to know that, because I had recently […]

Nishta - thank you for the reminder–I’m backing up my time machine now.

Amanda B - thanks for the reminder! I am backing up my work as I type right now :)

art - I learned the hard way. I thought Macs were somehow immune to crashing and failing. Two hard drives and one disc drive later I’m a backing-up machine!

tbillini - Yay, Apple! Yay, backup!
With OSX and Time Machine, there’s really no reason NOT to (back-up).
Thanks for the reminder!

Nupur - I’ve been meaning to go eat brunch at the Rooster Cafe for months- now that pictures makes me want to schedule it for this very weekend.

gemma - Glad to hear it Nishta, Amanda, art and tbillini! Thanks to my new OS, I can now join the legions of Time Machine users. Very happy about that.
Hi Nupur, I loved that place. I was only in St. Louis for a long weekend, but it was by far the best food I ate. I hope you enjoy it!

Buttermilk Dill Dressing

There are few things better than a salad dressed in homemade, creamy dressing to cool off a summer afternoon. The earthy flavors of dill combined with the subtle tartness buttermilk in this recipe make it the only dairy-based dressing I make with any frequency. This recipe was inspired by a restaurant here in Chicago called […]

Nick - What about a salad dressed in slacks and a monocle?

bibliochef - I love the idea of a salad dressed in clasks and a monocle, but this dressing seems swell too

gemma - Thanks Nick. I love when my boyfriend heckles me on my website. xxoo
Thanks bibliochef. It is one of my favorite dressings.

Kaitlyn - Swim Cafe is in my neighborhood, but I’ve never had this dressing. I’m not a creamy dressing girl myself, but this does look delicious!

gemma - Living near Swim Cafe would be so nice!

Shannarae - My Goddess! This dressing is fantastic. I will never buy store-bought again. Thank you!

Gemma - Thanks for such a kind comment Shannaree, I’m so happy to hear that!

Laura - Ha! I was literally doing a search for “buttermilk dill dressing” to try and replicate the dill dressing at [my local cafe] Swim, which is my favorite dressing EVER, and I landed on your page! How funny. : )

Lemon and Herb Potato Salad

Picnic salads were a staple at summer events growing up in a small Midwestern town. All manner of egg salads, potato salads and pasta salads could be found at any reasonably sized gathering.  I'm not sure if it was the mayonnaise, questionable refrigeration methods, or the prevalence of raw onions — but I usually made […]

Terry B - This sounds delicious. Beautiful photo too, Gemma. Why do you think they have you pierce the potatoes? Does it perhaps reduce the splitting of the potato skins or help them cook faster?

gemma - Thank you Terry! I think it reduces splitting, though it may very well speed up cooking times as well.

Summer Strawberry Salad

With all the cold weather we've been having, you'd hardly know it is June.  While I'm looking forward to warm summer nights in our backyard, I've been content to spend the evenings inside lately — listening to the rain fall and eating impressive quantities of fresh fruits and vegetables.  I'll get back to my stories […]

Jen - One of my favorite summer salads is very similar to this. Sub feta for the hard cheese and balsamic glaze for straight vinegar. Sometimes we add chopped vegan bacon too. Yum.

Kaitlyn - I have a surplus of strawberries in my fridge, this would make great use out of them! Plus, that fig balsamic vinegar sounds delicious.

Nishta - I am obsessed with fig balsamic vinegar, too! one of my favorite things to do with it is halve figs, brown them a bit in a pan with a little butter, then deglaze the pan with the balsamic and let it get syrupy. put it all over vanilla ice cream–yum, yum, yum.
I recently posted about a strawberry salad myself, but with some pecans & blue cheese. strawberries are so beautiful right now, I can’t resist putting them in everything!

gemma - Jen, the bacon addition sounds like a great idea. I’ll have to try that next time.

Shannalee - Yum, and I love how simple the list of ingredients (and instructions) is. Perfect summer salad.
