When the recent issue of Gourmet arrived in my mailbox, I was quite taken with their retro-inspired tomato and corn pie recipe. This dish truly embodies the bounty of a midwestern summer. Seasonal ingredients topped with sharp Cheddar cheese, fresh herbs and a dollop of mayonnaise make this meal well worth the trouble of baking in August. I followed the […]

Monthly Archives: August 2009In the winter, one of my favorite dishes to make involves cannellini beans fried in a bit of butter with salt and pepper. It's about as basic as you can get, but I love the unadulterated flavors of this creamy bean. As we prepare for our move, I've continued to try to find ways to […] show 14 comments This sounds like a great dip! As I prepare for my move too, I’ll try the same thing. I think I have beans left in the cabinet, too. This sounds like a great dip! As I prepare for my move too, I’ll try the same thing. I think I have beans left in the cabinet, too. There is something so enjoyable about using up the last few things before a move. Good luck with yours Jess! There is something so enjoyable about using up the last few things before a move. Thanks for dropping by and introducing me to your great site! We are moving at the end of this month into the main floor of a beautiful old graystone mansion on one of Chicago’s tree-lined boulevards. It’s the kind of place that I would often enviously eye as I walked to my uninspiring, white-walled home – wishing for a bit of that old hardwood and sunshine. Ever since my parents brought home an Apple IIc Plus in the late 80’s, we’ve been serious fans of the company. My brother even works for them now. So when the hard drive on my 2007 MacBook failed Monday night as I was uploading photos, it was comforting to know that, because I had recently […] show 6 comments thank you for the reminder–I’m backing up my time machine now. thanks for the reminder! I am backing up my work as I type right now :) I learned the hard way. I thought Macs were somehow immune to crashing and failing. Two hard drives and one disc drive later I’m a backing-up machine!
I’ve been meaning to go eat brunch at the Rooster Cafe for months- now that pictures makes me want to schedule it for this very weekend.
There are few things better than a salad dressed in homemade, creamy dressing to cool off a summer afternoon. The earthy flavors of dill combined with the subtle tartness buttermilk in this recipe make it the only dairy-based dressing I make with any frequency. This recipe was inspired by a restaurant here in Chicago called […] show 8 comments What about a salad dressed in slacks and a monocle? I love the idea of a salad dressed in clasks and a monocle, but this dressing seems swell too
Swim Cafe is in my neighborhood, but I’ve never had this dressing. I’m not a creamy dressing girl myself, but this does look delicious! Living near Swim Cafe would be so nice! My Goddess! This dressing is fantastic. I will never buy store-bought again. Thank you! Thanks for such a kind comment Shannaree, I’m so happy to hear that! Ha! I was literally doing a search for “buttermilk dill dressing” to try and replicate the dill dressing at [my local cafe] Swim, which is my favorite dressing EVER, and I landed on your page! How funny. : ) |

Bonni in Waupaca - I’ve been making Laurie Colwin’s original version of this pie for years, both at home and at the restaurant, and it’s a big hit. Pregnant women crave it, college students home for the summer wax nostalgic for it, and a French family that visits an immigrant daughter for a late summer reunion requests it every year.
At any rate, to avoid the soggy crust I put a thin layer of cheese in first, before the tomatoes. And I’m sure to assemble the pie only when the oven is preheated and we’re ready to pop it in directly. After that, it keeps quite well for at least a day, if it lasts that long.
Also, in looking over the recipe in Epicurious, I see that they’ve added 3/4 cup of milk — I never do that, and I don’t believe that Colwin’s recipe had that either. Just the mayo mixed with lemon juice.
Cheers, and my best to your folks.
