Northwest Fast Food

My recent trip to the northwest was by all accounts delicious.  I already shared our train adventure with you, and while there are some elaborate meals that I will divulge in due time, I’d like to share one of my favorite guilty pleasures with you: Burgerville.   Those of you who live in the northwest […]

Jen - OMG! How far do you think the nearest Burgerville is from Seattle!
You have reminded me of greatness, and I love you.

armymamma - I live in Tacoma and sometimes my husband and I get a crazy craving for Burgerville and we’ll drive to Centrallia, which is about AN HOUR just to get some fast food. We don’t normally eat that kind of stuff, but once in awhile a good fast food burger really hits the spot.

gemma - armymamma, I would do the same if there was a Burgerville an hour away from Chicago!

Eating on the Empire Builder

Before I took a recent train trip from Chicago to Portland, I looked for information on what to expect from the Amtrak dining car.  My search was largely fruitless. To help fill this gap for future riders, I posted an account of my dining experience at Gapers Block, a Chicago-based website that I also write […]

The Best Granola

About one year ago I made my first batch of homemade granola using the Rancho La Puerta recipe.  The results were good and I gave away small gift bags of it around the holidays. I spent some time trying to modify the recipe to exactly suit my tastes — but on a recent vacation to […]

Illanna - I bought all the ingredients to make this, I’m going to try it today. There are some items in the granola I have never tried, like millet and flax seed meal. I’m looking forward to eating the granola with some yogurt and berries! Thanks for the recipe!

Jenni - I made this granola over the weekend — it’s delicious! Next time, I’m going to substitute rolled oats for some of the steel cut oats. I think it would make a better breakfast cereal that way. Thanks!

AmyRuth - Excited to find a granola similar to one I enjoyed in Playa del Carmen at http://www.lacuevadelchango.com/ La Cueva del Chango. They have wonderful fresh, flavorful food. Breakfast choices are amazing and they serve their granola with your choice with or without a combo of yogurt, fresh fruit and oatmeal. Ymmmm It can’t get any better than that. Besides its a wonderful place to enjoy those you love.

Amanda - Oh man, that looks absolutely rich and moist ! Tortes are awesome due to the lack of flour and I haven’t made one in months and months. I would probably use 1 cup of preserves instead of 1/2 raspberry liquid though. That’d be ok, right?

Gemma - I’m sure that would be fine. It is possible it would make the final product a bit less moist, but it would definitely be worth a try.

Carolyn - This sounds wonderful! We have a large event coming up, do you think I could freeze The torte until a day or two before the event then thaw & glaze? Or even do the entire thing, glaze and all, and freeze?

Gemma - I think you could definitely freeze the torte for a day or two. I’m not sure about the glaze, but it would probably work.
Great idea!
