Gemma: Bennison’s Bakery

This past Saturday Harold and I ventured to the outskirts of Chicago where lies Evanston, an off-shoot of the city that is neither truly Chicago nor quite a suburb. The purpose of this trek was to visit Jory Downer’s  Bennison’s Bakery who, along with two other bakers from the U.S., just won the Coupe du […]

eatchicago - I’m glad you found Bennisons, I really like it there. I’m especially fond of their sour cream doughnuts which I think are only available on Tues. mornings (or maybe it’s Thurs.) I’m also partial to their chocolate-cake doughnuts. Oh yeah, and the kuchen.
One small gripe: I would hardly consider Evanston to be the far outskirts (since it borders the city), nor would I consider it to be wealthy. It does have a couple wealthy neighborhoods, but it also has a huge depressed area and quite a bit of crime.

gemma - Mmmm.. Sour cream doughnuts sound lovely. I will have to time my next trip accordingly.
Fair enough concerning my opening lines. From what I have seen, Evanston seems quite a bit more wealthy than much of Chicago, but I don’t live there, so I will cut that out.
‘Outskirts’ generally refers to ‘away from the center’ or ‘border’ but perhaps it would sound better if I removed the ‘far.’
Sorry for the misunderstanding! Take care.

tara - That brioche seems delicious, so I’m sorry to hear that the taste did not live up to it’s looks! I agree, roasted peppers seem like a strange addition to a loaf; pockets of moist slippery things are not usually a craving. It seems so very hard to find a place that is able to produce that “fantasy” loaf or baguette.

gemma - Tara, I agree. It actually has been harder than I thought to find quality breads. This isn’t to say we haven’t found delicous breads, but nothing traditional perhaps. Nothing that makes me think, “damn, now that’s a brioche.” One day. . . Maybe I just have to go back to Paris. I was only there briefly, but I ate enough bread to last a few months while there, and I loved it.

Saucy

My Chive & Sour Cream Waffles and Pea & Chive Soup have been selected as the Saucy Magazine recipe of the day.  I am a huge fan of Saucy and thus I am deeply flattered.  Thanks!

Garden

We spent a bit of this Sunday afternoon in the garden (there’s John). Things are coming up and looking lovely. (our herbs have disappeared though. . .) I ate a delicious radish and tried some excellent baby spinach. Ben has been doing most of the work in the garden. He gave me these lovely flowers […]

Chive & Sour Cream Waffles with Pea & Chive Soup

After days of gorgeous, nearly summery weather, Chicago is back to its grey, cold, windy self.  We have had storms aplenty, and for those of you not from the Midwest, these are no ‘spring showers.’  The storms and the chill inspired a bit of comfort food.  Chive & Sour Cream Waffles and Pea & Chive […]

Dagmar - That sounds delicious, I think that I also will have to steel my mother’s waffle iron (just as your mother she hasn’t used it for years….) :-)

Jennifer - I’ve been on a huge waffle kick lately. Thanks for another great recipe to add to the list. The pairing looks really tempting!

tara - Savory waffles paired with soup – what a perfect idea. I’ve been thinking about such pairings lately, and this never occured to me! What possibilites, some crème fraiche, a bit of smoked salmon … lovely!

colleen - I’ve never owned a waffle iron but would like to make waffles. Do you know some MacGuyver moves to make them using materials I might find around the house? Like with empty beer cans and a blow dryer?

gemma - So many new sites to look at (and so many cute pets!)
Dagmar, stealing unused kitchen items is perfectly moral in my book. Nice site. Our rhubarb is coming up and I will have to give the Rhubarb Cornmeal Cake a try. That sounds excellent.
Jennifer, I am so glad to finally have a waffle iron. They are a great comfort food. Your dog is adorable. I look forward to reading through your site more.
Tara, the smoked salmon sounds like a lovely match. I am imagining sandwhiches made with the waffles as bread. . .
Welcome to the food blogging world. From the first few posts it is clear you are both an excellent cook and a great photographer. I am excited to see more as your blog grows!
Ms. Colleen, I think you should come over for breakfast some weekend morning and we can contemplate this question over some vegan waffles. You will have to bring the recipe and tell me what to buy though. For the record, I think a hair crimper from the 80’s should be employed.

Crépes

While at Renn Fayre this past weekend I had the opportunity to eat some of the crépes that the French department makes as a fundraiser.  They have a nice operation with tasty filling choices and fancy crépe makers.  I hadn’t made crépes myself in about 2 years, but I was inspired to make some for […]

Zarah Maria - Oh-la-la, crepes! Just out of curiosity – would that be havarti with spinach and dill in it, or just plain havarti topped with spinach and dill? We only have the regular non-equipped kind here, do you get combos in the US?

gemma - Hi Zarah. It was made with Havarti-Dill cheese (all in one) topped with fresh spinach. No Havarti Dill cheese! What a shame. It is one of my favorites.

Nic - How unusual to have beer in crepe batter, particularly with the banana crepe, as I can see how it would work well with the savories. Nutella and bananas is my favorite crepe combo, personally. Yum!

gemma - Yep, I guess the beer wasn’t ideally suited for the sweet crépe (it was a last minute craving), but actually the batter didn’t taste too beer-y. I would never throw in a can of MGD (let alone have it in the house!), but this heartier bock gave the batter a nice complexity. A stout would work lovely as well. I think these kinds of beers can add a level to the taste that could be comparable to chocolate perhaps. I might be crazy though.
I still do like, and would most likely opt for, a more traditional (e.g. no beer) batter recipe if I were making primarily sweet crépes.
Mmm. . . Nutella.
